Myers Briggs and Spiritual Gifts

I have long enjoyed studying about and discussing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It’s a personality inventory that makes no judgment calls, there are no right or wrong answers, it simply tells you how you’re wired. I’ve taken a lot of such tests in my life, and each one had its own focus and interest, but the MBTI is a different animal. When I had finished the test for the first time, and I read the description of the personality type they had assigned to me, it was downright spooky. It was like the authors of the test had been looking over my shoulder my whole life!

It was frighteningly accurate, and since that day I have become a huge fan. It quickly became evident to me that the 16 Myers-Briggs personality types are really nothing more than a system for describing our spiritual gifts. I believe that every human being was born with innate talents and gifts, with a specific role in the kingdom of God.

The modern church tends to emphasize just getting people saved. We want them to say yes to Jesus and make a public confession, then we’re off to save a new crowd. Where we often drop the ball is in the realm of discipleship and training for reigning. Every individual in the world is uniquely wired, according to God’s master plan, to fit into the puzzle in a specific area.

When people first come to know Jesus, it is absolutely imperative that we help them determine how they are wired, what their place in the kingdom of God looks like, and how we can all help them get there quickly and efficiently. Lacking this knowledge, can we truly disciple them effectively?

By examining our spiritual gifts in light of our personality type, we can get a clearer understanding of our place in the Body of Christ. This should lead to a more effective witness in the world as ambassadors of Jesus Christ, as each of us operates more clearly and concisely in the gifts and personalities that we were created with – that are literally wired into our DNA.

The purpose, then, of this book is to help each of us better understand how we are individually wired so that we can take full advantage of the gifts we’ve been given, all for the glory of God and for the advancement of His kingdom of love and grace on this earth.
