Consciousness and Matter Create One Another!
These guys are physicists, among them a Nobel Laureate, a university professor and an author. They are saying some interesting things about quantum physics:
Eugene Wigner, physicist and Nobel Prize laureate: “It is not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way without reference to consciousness”
John Wheeler, Princeton University: “…subjective and objective realities, consciousness, and matter mutually create each other”
Jack Sarfatti, theoretical physicist: “…the structure of matter may not be independent of consciousness”
Amit Goswami, theoretical nuclear physicist: “Consciousness is the ground of all being…it is matter that is the epiphenomenon, not consciousness.”
Science has been discovering an intimate link between consciousness and the very existence of matter. We’ve known for a long time that matter changes its behavior on a subatomic level based on whether or not it’s being observed. But it turns out the relationship between the two is much more intimate: matter and consciousness actually require one another for their very existence. This intimate connection is being verified in the lab, and concrete evidence exists to prove it.
From the perspective of one who believes that an intelligent Creator created the universe, this makes complete sense. I believe that all of matter is infused with the presence of God. Just read Psalm 139. You can’t escape Him. He’s inside us, He’s outside us, He’s out there in deepest, darkest outer space, He permeates the air you breathe. So it makes sense that matter has some kind of connection with consciousness, especially the consciousness of God Himself.
So let’s take this a step further. If God’s presence and consciousness permeates all of space and matter, then so do all of His attributes. It may sound strange to ask questions like “Where is God’s faith?” but it makes sense from a quantum physics point of view. If I happen to have a particular personality quirk, let’s say a sense of humor, then when I walk into a room, so does my sense of humor. Those things that are unique to my personality travel with me wherever I go. Likewise with God. He is everywhere. So is His love, His faith, His grace and mercy. All of His attributes permeate all of the universe.
So if the faith of God permeates all of space and matter, then it’s all over me, inside me, penetrating me. The Bible makes it clear that we are to have the faith of God. Verses like Mark 11:22 are often translated “Have faith in God,” but they literally say “Have the faith of God.” It is God’s faith that we inherit when we begin walking with Him, not our own. Otherwise our lives with Him would not be a free gift, but we would have earned it through exercising our own faith. And as Paul said to the Galatians, we came to God by the Spirit, and we mature and progress by the Spirit, not by anything in us (Galatians 3:3-5).
So the consciousness of God and all His attributes permeate all of space and matter. And you have been placed in Christ and have the mind of Christ and have His Spirit within you. Therefore, you too have a consciousness that permeates the matter all around you.
Thus the conclusions that the physicists quoted above have made. You have a consciousness that not only permeates matter but is able to control it. What else is a miracle or an answer to prayer but your consciousness, affecting the consciousness of God in such a way that He re-arranges matter at your request? In fact, I’m not so sure that God has to specifically intervene in order for a miracle to take place. Jesus clearly taught us to speak to our mountains (Matthew 17:20, 21:21). Sure, it’s God’s power that ultimately does the work. But isn’t that true of everything that happens in the entire universe? As the Prime Mover, God is responsible for it all and He sustains it in real time (Colossians 1:17). So there is a latent power in the universe that God encourages us to use. Remember the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’s garment and got healed? He didn’t specifically heal her. In fact, He said “Your faith has healed you.”
I believe science is beginning to prove the existence of the invisible spiritual realm. I also believe that this invisible spiritual realm is the foundation upon which the physical universe is built. As Amit Goswami says above, “it is matter that is the epiphenomenon (the side effect or the result), not consciousness.” Matter is the by-product. And science is proving that. Just what the Bible has been teaching for millennia! And faith is one of the sources of power that we have at our disposal to bring heaven to earth for those around us who need a dose of heaven!
